5 Ways I'm healthier then 5 years ago5 years ago, I wasn’t in the best physical or mental state, I’d not long had my son, who was born at 27 weeks, and I was suffering from a lot of anxiety issues and also trying to bond with my son who was in an incubator in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care).

Over the past few years, I have become more healthy and I’ve made a few changes to my lifestyle with the aim to improve my health in both body and mind and I certainly feel all these changes have been worth it.

I’m going to go through the big 5 changes that I’ve made that I feel have had the most impact.

Changed my Diet

Firstly, I cut out all meat and dairy and changed to a plant-based diet. I’ve increased my intake of fruits and vegetables significantly in doing this. I eat a lot more fibre and a lot more variety of foods now than I ever used to.

One of the biggest changes, besides a large drop in weight, was that my chronic migraines mostly stopped, I went from having a migraine every day to having a handful a month.

Learning to love exercise

During the last 5 years I have come to love exercise, I know right, 5 years ago I was some who avoided exercise if I could. Now I walk, run and lift weights. I’ve been running every day since August 11th for a 365 day run challenge raising money and awareness for Macmillan Cancer Support plus lifting weights on average of 3 times a week.

Remove the toxic chemicals from the home

I also decided to remove all the toxic cleaners from the home and now use more natural versions. There are so many available in the shops nowadays but you can also make your own laundry soap, cleaning liquids and room fresheners yourself.

I definitely do not like the idea of all these toxic chemicals poisoning the environment I am raising my son in, especially with his ‘chronic lung disease’ that puts him back on oxygen multiple times a year.

Making the change to cruelty-free skincare

On a similar note, I now choose to use cruelty-free and more natural products on my skin. We cant expect our body not to absorb some of whatever we put on our skin, so choosing natural products with no hidden nasty ingredients means I can limit the toxins absorbed.

Improving my mindset and getting over Anxiety

My mindset is one of the biggest things I’ve been working on recently, and this is an ongoing thing, 5 years ago I was on medication for anxiety. I stopped taking the medication and focussed on self-improvement, mastering my mindset and trying to find ways to get through each day without pulling my hair out or bursting into tears over silly things (not always easy with a little one around).

But I have found that working on myself a little every day, whether that be through reading a chapter of a self-help book, journaling or meditation has really helped me come a long way.

I feel I’ve come a long way in the last 5 years and I can only hope that the changes I’ve put in place continue to be a good fit for me and my family in the long run.

    You’re so right Vickie! Sometimes it’s hard as moms to remember to take care of ourselves. I also can really relate to the stress and anxiety you feel with a preemie in NICU, my middle son was born at 29 weeks. I really enjoy your blog, keep up the good work.

      Self care has become a non negotiable now, just as much for everyone else… if moms not happy then my family know about it 😁
